Hello – Higher Power – is it too late to become something a bit cooler than I am? Thanks!
The Ugly Truth:
This is not my first time, second time, or even third time reading Ingrid Law’s fictional novel Savvy, and I swear each time gets even better than the last. While the book is written for young adults/teens, and I mean that in the true sense of the word, I still find the plot interesting and the characters to be some of my longtime favorites. I strongly recommend this book to anyone who wants to dip their toe into a realistic fantasy novel and become a little inspired by themselves again.
The novel centers around Mississippi (Mibs) Beaumont as she approaches her thirteenth birthday. In the Beaumont family, when children enter their teenage years, it is not a simple affair of cakes and presents but actually runs the risk of much more drastic ventures as each child is bestowed a “savvy” or gift that allows them to perform unnatural things. Mibs has waited all her life to see what gift she may be given, only to have her world turned upside down when her “ordinary” father is in a near-fatal car accident just days before her most important day. Instead of wishing for the power to create music or move objects, she prays to have the ability to wake her dad up.
She, two of her brothers, and some… ~family~ friends… embark on an adventure of a lifetime as Mibs desperately tries to find a way to save the day. The story ignites the feeling of becoming your true self, finding freedom, and discovering what love, both in the romantic and familial sense, means to you. There are moments of angst, happiness, and familiarity that make this book one I will forever come back to.
